The meeting of the University Council was held on Thursday, April 18, 2024, with the presence of Dr. Ghasem Amoo Abedini, Deputy Minister of Education at the Ministry of Science, Research, and Technology, Dr. Ahmad Reza Rabbani, president of the University of Science and Technology of Mazandaran, Hojatoleslam Val-Muslimeen Heydari, responsible for the office of the Supreme Leader in the university, as well as university deputies and managers.
At the beginning of this session, Dr. Rabbani, while welcoming everyone, presented a comprehensive report on the progress made in the past two years. Referring to the extensive industrial and tourism capacities of the eastern region of Mazandaran province, he mentioned: “Despite the high industrial capacity in the region and talented human resources, the capacity of accepting students in public universities in relation to the population of the province is lower than the national average, and the lack of balanced development of universities in this province has led to the growth of the migration rate of local volunteers outside the province to continue their studies.”
Dr. Rabbani further emphasized the 65% increase in the number of university faculty members in the last two years, and pointed out the addition of 7 majors in the master's degree and energy engineering in the bachelor's degree. He also added: “In 1402, the license for the first doctoral course was obtained at this University, and according to the university's strategic program document, the development of academic fields in the fields of marine sciences, environment, oil and energy is on the agenda.”
The president of the University of Science and Technology of Mazandaran continued by referring to the significant growth of the university's research indicators and the promotion of the university's position in international ranking systems such as Symago, Europe, ISC, D8 group universities and industrial universities less than 40 years old; He pointed to the signing of extensive cooperation agreements with organizations and industries in the region:” These agreements provide the fields of scholarship for students in the industry and ultimately their employment. He emphasized that all the efforts of the management team of the university have been to move towards a mission-oriented and entrepreneurial university with a special focus on meeting regional needs.”
In conclusion, Dr. Rabbani pointed to the insignificant share of about 15% of the state universities of the province in accepting students and added that about 85% of the share of higher education in the province is related to the non-state universities and naturally, an important part of the unemployed graduates of the province is also related to these universities and should be taken into consideration in order to increase the quality of education in the province. He added that the issue of forming a campus and merging the state universities of the province will cause serious damage to the state higher education in the province because with the formation of the campus, similar fields in the campuses will be eliminated and this will further reduce the share of state universities in accepting students. In the current situation, the public universities of Mazandaran province have the lowest share among the universities of the country. The removal of similar courses will cause the migration of some students to continue studying in the removed or limited courses to universities in other provinces.
Currently, the state universities of the province, including the University of Science and Technology of Mazandaran, have a good ranking in terms of scientific ranking, for example, the University of Science and Technology of Mazandaran in 2024 in the Symgo ranking, which is known as a reliable global ranking, ranked 34th in the field of research among 196 scientific centers, which is higher than many universities in the country.
In the final part of this meeting, Dr. Amoo Abedini expressed his satisfaction with the progress of University of Science and Technology of Mazandaran and thanked the administrators and young professors of this university for facilitating the process of obtaining licenses for new courses in undergraduate and graduate studies. Emphasizing the necessity of improving higher education in the province, he pointed out that universities should reach the highest productivity rate in educational and research affairs by presenting a suitable model and play a prominent and essential role in the promotion of the country's scientific system.
The presentation of opinions and solutions to improve the scientific status and educational development of University of Science and Technology of Mazandaran by members of the university council was another part of this meeting.
